Top Tips For Making Crumb Cake Recipe

  • Measure your flour accurately. A scale is a great tool to use when measuring flour. If you don’t own a scale, fluff the flour using a spoon. Then, spoon it into cups and level it with a knife. This is the best method to measure flour without having to overpack the measuring cup.
  • Don’t overmix the crumb topping or it will become paste-like. The topping should have a crumbly texture.
  • Make sure that baking soda and baking powder have not expired. Baking soda and baking powder can cause cakes to not rise and become dense.
  • Mix all ingredients at room temperature until they are well combined.
  • To pop any air bubbles, tap the pan on the counter before you add the crumb topping. This will also help to even out the batter in the pan.

Crumb Cake Recipe FAQ

Q.1 How do you make the perfect crumb?

Heat the oven to 200C. Mix the flour, ground almonds, butter, and sugar in a large bowl or food processor. Pulse briefly or rub your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs, with some larger lumps. Mix in the sugars.

Q.2 Why is my crumble not crunchy?

Your crumble topping doesn’t turn out crunchy because it hasn’t been made with Demerara sugar. It could also be due to the wrong topping ingredients: too much butter or too little flour.

Q.3 What is the crumb of a cake?

“Crumb” simply refers to the inside of the bread, cake, or pastry — the stuff contained within the crust. A crumb, like a crust, can come in many forms. You can make it soft and airy, dense and firm, tender and tough, or anything in between.
