What You All Need For This Recipe

👉 Spices I make a mixture consisting of ground ginger, ground cinnamon, and spice nutmeg.

When they are combined, these spices provide the cookies with a traditional deliciously spiced taste.

If you want to make a different spiced cookie you can check out the ginger snaps recipe.

👉 Butter – Butter ensures that you purchase unsalted butter, nonsalted butter. There are many brands of salted butter that do not come with a uniform level of salt.

Be sure that you have butter that is soft that when you press on it, your fingers leave the impression.

If the butter is cold, it will be difficult to whip it into an even consistency.

👉 Brown sugar provides the cookies chewy texture. If you don’t already have brown sugar check out my tutorial for how to create brown sugar.

👉 Molasses I would recommend using molasses with no sulfur because it produces more flavorful gingerbread man cookies.

I prefer this to the blackstrap molasses.

👉 Sugar powdered -it is Sugar sweetens food and thickens frosting.

If you don’t have it on hand Check out my blog post about the steps to making powdered sugar at home.

Possible Gingerbread Cookie Variations

👉 Do you want to decorate the Gingerbread Cookie you made?

👉 You are welcome to decorate them with:

👉 IcingAs previously mentioned I generally make a quick powdered sugar frosting. But royal icing or maple icing or any other frosting that you like could be a good choice.

👉 The powdered sugarFeel liberated to lightly dust cookies with sugar.

👉 Hot red: We were a kid and we would poke red hots in our gingerbread. It was a treat that I still enjoy.

👉 SprinklesThere can be a ton of interesting sprinkles you could use to decorate these cookies! Recently, I’ve been enjoying the variety of exciting sprinkle mixes available from Sprinkle Pop.

If you happen to want to find some natural-colored sprinkles, take a look at the adorable sprinkles of Supernatural. (Both are through Amazon.)

How To Make Gingerbread Cookies

👉 Within a bowl combine the ingredients: flour, ginger, cinnamon baking soda, nutmeg, and salt.

👉 If you have a stand mixer equipped with paddles mix the brown sugar and butter at medium speed, and mix until the mixture is fluffy.

👉 Incorporate the molasses, vanilla, egg, and mix until well-combined. Scrape the bowl and mix it again.

👉 Gradually add gradually until a smooth dough has formed. Make disks and cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 4 to 6 hours or for up to a night. The dough needs some time to chill, so don’t overdo it!

👉 Preheat the oven until 350F. On a surface that is well-floured, you can roll the chilled dough to 1/4 inch thickness.

Dust the top with flour and the rolling pin, too. Also, ensure you move the dough around to ensure it doesn’t get stuck.

👉 Cut the gingerbread characters using a cookie cutter, and place them on an oven baking sheet.

Bake the gingerbread biscuits for about 10 minutes, then allow them to cool.

👉 To create the royal icing put the powdered sugar into the bowl, then add the cream of tartar, and mix.

Incorporate an egg yolk, and mix until it is well combined. Add the vanilla, If you like, after which whisk in the liquid until desired consistency has been attained.

Transfer the icing into a piping bag with a round tip, or with the tip cut off.

👉 When your gingerbread cookie is cool Pipe the pants, shirt, and facial features. Sprinkles are great for eyes and buttons.

Also, you can include candy cane nuggets to gingerbread figures with bent arms.

Can I Freeze Gingerbread Cookies?

Yes, they will freeze after the icing has been fully set. Keep them in an airtight container in the freezer for up 2 months.

Pro Tips For This Recipe

👉 The addition of too much flour can cause the cookies to become dry and dense. The most efficient and simplest method to measure the amount of flour is using a kitchen scale.

👉 If you don’t own one, simply fluff the flour using a spoon, add it into the measuring cup, then use the knife to make it level.

👉 If you don’t have any piping bags to decorate your gingerbread characters, you could use a zip-top which you can cut away the corners of the bag after the icing has been placed inside.

👉 If you’re concerned about using egg whites that are raw to make royal icing make use of egg whites that have been pasteurized eggs.

👉 The gingerbread recipe is spicier by adding more ginger, or decreasing the spice levels to make it milder.

👉 If you’re not the royal-icing lover, then you can whip up an incredibly small amount of buttercream and decorate them with it instead.

It will take longer for them to set, but your gingerbread characters will taste delicious and look amazing.

👉 Don’t overdo the chill time! It’s vitally important since it’s a soft dough. If you’re looking to make a fast cookie, then use the same ingredients for my sugar cookies with no spread recipe!

About Royal Icing for Gingerbread

👉 If you’d rather not make royal icing yourself, you could also make use of buttercream frosting, but you can’t embellish it in a specific way. It is also possible to use commercially-available frosting (but be aware that you’ll be unable to stack the icings).

👉 The icing is very simple to make, but the trick is finding the right consistency, so make sure you don’t over-or little water. Let it make a decent length duration until the icing develops a lovely sheen.

👉 Remember that it will produce lots of icing, so if even if you’re only making the gingerbread man, you’ll probably only require half to two-thirds of the recipe given since they don’t require much icings like the Christmas trees or snowflakes.

Add sprinkles or candy for a visual treat. If you’ve baked any cookies that had bend arms, switch out the foil in exchange for peppermint balls.

Notes

The addition of too much flour can result in cookies that are dry and dense. The most efficient and simplest method to measure the flour is using the kitchen scale.

If you don’t have one you can fluff your flour using a spoon, add it into the measuring cup, and then use the knife to bring it to a level.

If you don’t have any piping bags to decorate your gingerbread characters, you could use a zip-top which you can cut away the top corner of the bag after the icing has been placed inside.

If you’re worried about using egg whites that are raw for royal icing make use of egg whites that have been pasteurized eggs.

It is possible to make gingerbread man spiced up with more ginger, or decrease the spice to get a more mild taste.

In case you’re not an avid Royal Icing fan, you could try making small amounts of buttercream and decorating them with it instead.

It may take a bit longer to set, but the gingerbread guys are delicious and will look fantastic.

Don’t overdo the chilling! It’s vitally important since this is a dough that’s soft. If you’re looking for a quick cookie, you can add the same ingredients to my sugar cookies with no spread recipe!
