Split Pea Soup is a hearty, healthy soup with crispy cooked Ham. This soup is extremely comforting and can be prepared ahead of time. Serve it with plenty of crusty bread for dunking.

How To Make Split Pea Soup

Fry the cooked ham in a Dutch oven.

Once the butter is lightly browned and crispy, remove it with a slotted spoon.

Sauté the chopped onion until soft.

Sauté for another few minutes.

Bring to a boil the broth and split peas.

Cover the pot with some of the ham and let it simmer for about 20 minutes.

After the food has been cooked, remove the lid.

Serve the soup with a potato masher.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups chopped onion
  • 1 cup diced carrot (1/4-inch dice)
  • 1 cup diced celery (1/4-inch dice)
  • 1/4 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of kosher salt, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus any additional flavor
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound dried split beans, rinsed, and sorted
  • 1 bone of meaty ham
  • 1 large bay leaf or 2 small
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme leaves, and the quantity divided

Instructions
